About HAL Zaandam Cruise Tours

The Ship. The Zaandam is a member of HAL's Rotterdam or "R" class of cruise ships. She weighs approximately 62,000 tons, and accommodates about 1,400 passengers. Passengers will find the ship large enough to provide plenty of choices in onboard experiences, yet small enough to feel cozy and intimate

Designers chose "music" as Zaandam's theme, and the ship features artifacts and memorabilia from a variety of musical genres. Musical instrument on display include Bill Clinton's saxophone, and autographed guitars from Queen, Iggy Pop, Eric Clapton and the Rolling Stones.

Dining. The ship features a number of dining options:

The main dining room features impeccable service and an extensive wine list. Five-course menus include continental cuisine, vegetarian and low-carb options. You may opt for traditional cruise dining with assigned times and tables, or choose HAL's As You Wish Dining for more flexibility.

The Pinnacle Grill is an intimate, reservations-only venue that serves premium Double R Ranch Beef and as well as a variety of seafood dishes for an additional dining fee.

Canaletto is a classic Italian restaurant serving seafood, grilled meats and more in a relaxed setting for dinner. This venue features a selection of antipasti, salads, soups, pasta, seafood, grilled meats and more.

The Lido Restaurant provides a relaxed ambiance for all three meals and features a variety of fresh, cooked-to-order specialties.

Daytime Activities. The Zaandam features two pools (one indoor and one outdoor), plus two hot tubs and two kids' pools. The Zaandam offers HAL's Explorations activities program, where an experienced travel guide educates passengers about the culture, wildlife and history of the ports to be visited. A Digital Workshop, powered by Windows - offers fun, free learning about digital photography, videos, scrapbooking, blogging and social networking. The Culinary Arts Center presents interactive gourmet cooking lessons taught by professional chefs. In addition to an Internet cafe, WI-FI is available throughout the ship.

Spa and Fitness. HAL's Greenhouse Spa & Salon offers all of the healthy and relaxing treatments one would expect at an upscale spa including massages, facials, and body wraps. Their signature treatment is the Hot Stone Massage, which they describe as "Harnessing the properties of volcanic basalt stones, guests are bathed in warm water and anointed with spicy, sensual aromas of the Orient. Deep penetrating heat from the stones massages the body using traditional techniques to release muscular tension and balance the spirit." The Greenhouse Retreat is a communal relaxation center that has an ambiance similar to a Turkish Bath. Different grottos and chambers release a variety of dry heat, steam and mists into the air with aromatherapy filled vapors. Relax on a heated ceramic lounge and allow the pressures of life to rinse away.

Tennis, basketball, and shuffleboard courts are available, as are a jogging track and ping-pong tables. A fully-equipped gym that features resistance and cardio equipment as well as regular fitness classes.

Nighttime Entertainment. Nightlife onboard the Statendam is elegant and plentiful. There are intimate, cabaret-style shows staged in the theater with professional performers. Mix is an innovative meeting place featuring three specialty venues: Champagne, for mid-day mimosas or anytime celebrations; Martinis, for Grey Goose cocktails and martini flights; and Spirits & Ales for microbrews, single malts and sports updates. Music and dancing in the various bars and lounges, a casino offering a variety of games when the ship is at sea. First-run movies are also shown in a theater setting.

Kids. The Zaandam offers a variety of supervised fun for kids.

For children aged 3-7, Club HAL offers activities like pirate treasure hunts, hands-on pizza making, storytelling, "Little Artists" crafts, ice cream sundae parties and a farewell pajama party.

Teens and tweens ages 8-12 have even more options and can participated in Xbox and Wii tournaments, relay races, scavenger hunts, and karaoke disco parties. At this age, they can also become involved with the award-winning National Park Service Jr. Ranger Program in Alaska on Alaska cruises.

Club HAL also offer activities for children aged 3-12 between 8:00am and 4:00pm on port days.

Teens ages 13-17 can enjoy more mature pursuits like mocktail mixology classes, late night sporting competitions, cooking demos, and teen yoga. There are also hip hop classes, guys verses girls scavenger hunts, tech classes and teen only night club events. They also have dedicated teen spaces.

In addition, the line offers kid-friendly food, with menu items that include sandwiches, tacos, hamburgers, hot dogs and pizza. HAL also offers kid-friendly birthday parties with advance notice.

Babysitting services are available for a small surcharge for children 3 years of age or older, but is provided by staff on a volunteer basis, and may not always be available. Babysitting service is not offered while the ship is in port.

Club HAL After Hours is from 10:00pm - 12:00am for children 3 years of age or older. The fee is US$5.00 per child, per hour.
