Viking River can be said to dominate the rivers of the world, as the line keeps adding record numbers of boats to a fleet that is already the world's largest. Viking's ships are the largest and the most contemporary.
The Viking longships were designed by the same team responsible for the yachts of Seabourn; they have a variety of stateroom classes (all with outside views), from the standard (which are thoughtfully laid out and, at 150 square feet, are bigger than those on other Viking boats) to the 445-square-foot Explorer Suites, which have private wraparound verandas and offer spectacular 270 degree views.
These ships are "green" and feature energy-efficient hybrid engines (quieter and less vibration), solar panels and organic herb gardens.
A signature feature is the indoor/outdoor Aquavit Terrace, a combination casual dining venue and lounge. Retractable floor-to-ceiling glass doors make it possible to admire the passing scenery regardless of weather conditions.
Viking is constantly adding "Explore More" land extensions, which allow guests to extend their stays and to explore such notable cities as Bruges, Krakow, Nuremberg and Prague, as well as the French Riviera and Lake Geneva. These extensions begin with a walking tour to familiarize guests with the area and also include high-quality hotel accommodations, with a Viking Concierge available on-site.
Thanks to a product that represents solid value, Viking has a high rate of customer loyalty and has been commended by Travel + Leisure , Conde Nast Traveler's Gold List, and National Geographic's The 10 Best of Everything, among others.
Like other lines, Viking occasionally runs such specials as 2-for-1 sales and elimination or reduction of the single supplement.
Viking River is best for:
Mature, well-traveled singles and couples who want a destination-centric river cruise;
Travelers who have an interest in the geography, culture and history of their cruise itinerary;
Younger, active adults who wish to try a destination-centric river cruise on a ship with contemporary style.
The atmosphere and experience onboard Viking River:
Picture a very comfortable, well-designed, contemporary-style hotel with inviting public spaces, floating on the world's rivers in a leisurely fashion. Onboard activities are minimal and tend to focus on enrichment: lectures, theme dinners featuring regional specialties and local musicians.
The ships have a contemporary and comfortable decor, with inviting public spaces where passengers can socialize. All cabins feature outside views -- and many have French balconies.
Every onshore day starts with a walking tour with knowledgeable local guides who offer an orientation to each port, as well as suggestions for personal exploration.
Food is good, though not "gourmet." Dress is casual, somewhat dressier for the captain's dinner and farewell dinner.
The clientele of Viking River:
Passengers are generally English-speaking, well-traveled and well-educated. Many are repeat guests and many, if not most passengers on a given cruise are 60+ or over and retired, people who enjoy immersing themselves in the history and culture of the regions visited. However, with the building of so many sleek longships and so many itineraries worldwide, the line aims to attract more 40+ and 50+ passengers. The China and Asia cruises already attract some younger travelers.
Regarding children onboard Viking River: Due to the nature of their cruise itineraries, Viking River does not maintain facilities or services for children aboard river cruise vessels. On all cruises and cruise journeys, minors under the age of 18 must be accompanied and share a stateroom with a parent, legal guardian or other responsible adult over the age of 21. They reserve the right to limit the number of minors under the age of 18 years on board.
