Independence of the Seas

The Ship. Built in 2008 and refurbished in 2013, the Independence of the Seas is a member of the Freedom class of cruise ships. At about 160,000 tons, she carries approximately 3,600 passengers and offers a large variety of amenities and entertainment options. On Independence of the Seas, cruisers can expect a modern, mega-cruise-ship experience.

Dining. The Independence of the Seas offers a satisfying selection of eateries. The main dining room offers both traditional assigned times and seatings, as well My Time Dining where cruisers can pick tehir dining time and change their reservations daily. In addition to the Lido Deck buffets, diners can also make reservations for Giovani's Table (which serves family-style Italian food), and the Chops Grille steakhouse. Both restaurants charge extra fees. Other options include Johnny Rockets for burgers, a pizzeria, a coffee bar, Cupcake Cupboard (a vintage-style gourmet bakery) and Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream. Free room service is also available most of the day (with a small charge during the wee hours).

Daytime Activities. The Independence of the Seas offers an wide range of activities to keep voyagers entertained:

Miniature golf
Giant outdoor movie screen
Rock-climbing wall

The four salt water pools include one pool reserved for adults and the H20 Zone water park reserved for kids. It also has six hot tubs - two of them cantilevered over the water for spectacular views.

Duty-free shopping is available onboard, as are other entertaining activities and get-togethers throughout the day. An Internet cafe and Wi-Fi are available as well. Royal Connect Phones (available for a small fee) help passengers stay in touch with each other on board, and even help parents track their kids' whereabouts.

Spa and Fitness. The full-service, Vitality at Sea Spa features saunas and steam rooms, and a fine selection of spa treatments, including couples massage suites and individual treatment rooms. All of the basic massages and treatments are offered, plus more-exotic procedures including 24-karat gold facials, Botox injections, acupuncture and teeth whitening.

For all of the relaxation to be found on board, it's also easy to stay fit. The Freedom of the Sea's fitness offerings include:

full-sized basketball court,
regulation boxing ring
running track.
fitness center with cardio and weight-training equipment
fitness classes, including cycling, kickboxing, yoga and Pilates.

Nighttime Entertainment. Independence of the Seas has an abundance of nightlife. There are ice skating extravaganzas, standup comedy shows and Broadway-style theater. Numerous bars, lounges and dance clubs feature varied musical styles for every generation. Voyagers can try their luck at the ship's large casino when the ship is at sea. Poker games and tournaments are also staged throughout each voyage.

Kids

Royal Caribbean's kids programs provide fun and learning for children from babies to teens.

Royal Babies® and Royal Tots® are 45-minute interactive playgroup sessions developed by early childhood experts at Fisher-Price®.

The complimentary, award-winning Adventure Ocean® Youth Program is let led by accredited, experienced counselors with four-year degrees in education, recreation or a related field. Onboard Independence of the Seas, kids aren't just kids. They're inquisitive scientists exploring the insect world, eye-patched pirates, or the next great athlete to take the gold at the Wacky Olympics. With interactive programs and activities designed just for their age group, Adventure Ocean gives kids the chance to imagine themselves embarking on a whole new adventure.

Teens and Tweens
The teen and tween program (12-14 and 14-17) isn't a structured set of classes or rules - these almost adults deserve a vacation all their own. Kids can join pre-planned events throughout the day or simply hang out in teen-only spaces - with Adventure Ocean staff who keep the good times coming. Activities include rock climbing, dodgeball, video game tournaments, barbecues, movie nights, talent shows and even a DJ Academy.

Kids and teens can enjoy activities into the late evening with extended hours in the Adventure Ocean and teen-only spaces. An hourly rate applies after 10 p.m.
