Small but plenty of character, August 23, 2010
Reviewer: Rick Helm

Pros: The boardwalks in town make it feel like you're back in time

Cons: It's not all it appears to be, some of the facades are fake

The history of Skagway is all about the Gold Rush, so it's worth buying tickets for the train ride up to White Pass, following the route of the original "stampeders" on their way into the Klondike. Views are spectacular and the commentary is interesting. The route takes you over some pretty rickety looking bridges but it adds to the thrill. The train can be boarded next to the cruise ship but don't let that stop you visiting the town before or after.

The town of Skagway is quite small but definitely worth a visit. It was a pleasure to stroll along the boardwalks past the buildings that retain an air of the past about them. Some are more real than others, with more than the occasional artificial facade, but the overall feel is relaxed and pleasant.

Check out the train station and visitor center. We found the staff very helpful and ready to chat. It's a walk into town from the ship or you can get off the train at the town station on the way back. However, the walk is not long (ten minutes) and not unpleasant.

Overall, a really nice place to spend a couple of hours and an excellent excursion on the train.
