Misty Fjords has plusses and minuses, June 9, 2011
Pros: Beautiful scenery at Misty Fjords
Cons: It takes two hours to get there aboard the boat.
We took a cruise ship excursion to Misty Fjords. The place itself was beautiful, but it takes two hours to get there and two hours to return. We spent about 20-30 minutes once we got there but there was no getting off the boat. We did see a pod of orcas on the way back, so that was definitely a plus. In summary, I think we might have been able to make better use of the time by staying in Ketchikan itself rather than the time aboard the tour boat.

Plenty to see in the town, August 23, 2010

Pros: A good size town with some life of its own beyond the cruise ships
Cons: Beware the salmon hatchery if you are concerned about animal welfare
Ketchikan was a good place to visit, full of interesting things to see and some delightful walks. We were lucky enough to be there when the salmon were running, so this provided a sight to behold. Creek Street is really nice, Dolly's House is small but worth a visit, and the town is big enough to wander around and feel you are away from the tourist shops. The salmon hatchery is interesting but we couldn't get a satisfactory explanation as to why they were bludgeoned to death, rather than being killed more humanely and efficiently. Don't go if you don't like the sight of blood because you are not warned until you have paid your money. There are two bald headed eagles in there which you get to see at closehand. The lumberjack show was good fun, if a little expensive. Overall a good day's visit and, unusually for Ketchikan, it didn't rain.
