No tour necessary, September 13, 2010
Reviewer: Cubuff1

Pros: Clean and compact, very nice market for lunch

Cons: Not much to do compared to other ports

We enjoyed doing this port on our own. It is easy to take public transport which is very reasonable. The 3T "tourist tram" takes you to the Rock Church and Sibilius Monument (only attractions not within walking distance of Market Square). Stop at the tourist info center first to pick up maps and a tour to follow on this tram, very helpful. Good lunch at the market of reindeer or exotic fish dishes. Tip: Make sure you get a one-day transport pass and it will include the ferry to Sumolina Island. The island is like a huge park and nice view of Helsinki on return.

One of the most beautiful port cities in Europe; don't miss it, August 31, 2010
Reviewer: mrovene

Pros: I loved the marketplace, don't forget to try the smoked fish

Cons: Very expensive

Helsinki is an amazing city. Contrast the Lutheran and Russian orthodox churches at opposite ends of the square and you begin to get a grasp of it. Here are few of the highlights to see when you are in a hurry: Take the tram and get a feel for the city. You can get around in about 1-1/2 hours. There are several small squares with markets and shopping. Go to the national museum to check out the history of Finland. If you have kids try Tivoli which is the circus-type amusement park on top of the hill. Also try the boat ride to the island of Savolina, it is a cool trip. Stockman department store is a must see, right next to the central train station. Don't forget the street food: Pulla (pastry), Voi Lepa (open-faced sandwiches, Riisi Pirika (rye and rice pies), Olut (Finnish love their beer), Naki lepa (hot dogs...don't forget the sweet mustard. Finns are quiet until you get a few beers in them. They are very proud of their country. Sauna is like a religion (try it. This is a pretty, very clean place, most people speak English. Be cool and everything will be Hyvaa/Good, Kiittos/Thanks, Hei Hei/Hello, Kulla/Yes, Ei/No, Olut/ you have the Helsinki basics. Suomi Sissu
