Canaveral has more to do than the Kennedy Space Center and Orlando attractions, September 22, 2010
Reviewer: KAS

Pros: Kennedy Space Center and the Orlando attractions, as well local places to visit

Cons: Poor access to The Cove (restaurants, fishing) and Jetty Park side of the port

I live in and travel from Port Canaveral and feel there are great things cruise travelers are missing here. Everyone knows that Kennedy Space Center and the Orlando attractions are nearby but there are other places to visit that are fun and far less expensive.

If you have already done the Orlando attractions and the Space Center give some thought to a few of these local spots: First is the wonderful beach at Jetty Park which is a part of the port facility. It is on the south side of the port and requires some effort to get to from your ship but it is a wonderful, life-guarded ocean beach and quarter mile long fishing pier. There are even beach access wheelchairs that can be borrowed there.

Next, The Cove which is also on the south side of the port, is full of local restaurants/bars with great seafood and grill items as well as local entertainment. There are many ocean fishing options available in The Cove area too.

The best place nearby to view manatees and other local wildlife is at the lock between the canal into the port and the Banana River (the best spot along the lock is at the Coast Guard station).

Another great local place to visit is Cocoa Village on the mainland. Cocoa Village is the old downtown of Cocoa, Florida. The Village has several blocks of eclectic retail shops with unique items from gifts, clothing and shoes to antiques, beach decor, a knitting shop, linens, and other quirky lines of merchandise. There are no chain stores here but there are also many food options from fine dining to ice cream and pizza, and everything in between; plus a nice bakery or two. On Wednesday there is a farmers market in The Village and some days you will find musical entertainment at lunchtime. For those who find the Florida heat a problem, the streets in Cocoa Village are shaded by large old trees which makes it a welcome place to be outdoors without the sun beating on you.

A final suggestion and a very different type of local attraction are the airboat rides through the grasses and waterways of the St. John's River. There you will likely see alligators and other wildlife. The Lone Cabbage Fish Camp is the best known and probably the closest place to the port for taking an airboat ride and it is a lot of fun.

Without going to Orlando or the Space Center you can have a great time at Port Canaveral.

Easy Park, Easy Go, September 12, 2010
Reviewer: jnutter9

Pros: Not rushed, easy in & out, reasonable parkling

Cons: Porters might be good for elderly

Canaveral Harbor is close to our home and therefore so easy to access. Parking is easy and reasonably priced. So quick to disembark and car is so close. Hassle-free, I would say.

It is delightful to cross over the bridge and be able to see all of the ships in port waiting to board the lucky guests for a week of fun and relaxation.
