Good ship and good staff. Lousy food, January 28, 2013
Reviewer: name4sk

Pros: The nightime entertainment is excellent. The staff is friendly and attentive

Cons: The Garden Buffet food is old and re-heated

Date of cruise: January 12, 2013

Departure port: Rome

Region visited: Middle East

Cabin category: Inside

Good for children: Yes

This was my fifth cruise with NCL. NCL consistently does an excellent job at providing night time entertainment. The staff is always attentive and friendly. Freestyle is a great way to travel, especially if you prefer to have the flexibility of dining on your own schedule.

Cons: NCL is failing at providing good food in the buffet area. NCL has "cheapened" up and is finding new ways to "nickle and dime" the cruisers. The spa is very nice but overpriced and offered no real bargains, something that has always been done in the past.

Overall, NCL is one of the most economical cruise lines available and offers a good cruise for the price paid, however NCL has cut back on the menus, on room service availability and on quality food. The room service menu has shrunk, along with the portions, not offering much choice for vegetarian dining.

Great experience for first-time travelers to Europe, October 30, 2010
Reviewer: bgdent62

Pros: Good value for the money and great ports

Cons: Expensive shore excursions

Departure port: Barcelona

Region visited: Europe

Cabin category: Balcony

Cabin number: 10588

This was my first trip to Europe and the cruise allowed for a taste of several great cities. The shore excursions from the ship are very expensive, but a friend who has traveled extensively recommended that my friends and I book excursions in Florence, Rome, and Naples with www.limoinrome.com rather than through NCL.

This was a cost-effective option for us, as we had a group of seven and filled a van. The cost was 500 Euros per tour, which divided by the seven in our group, was less than half the cost of the ship's excursions. As we were traveling in an eight-passenger van, we could get much closer to the sites we wanted to visit.

The ship excursions use large buses that can't navigate many of the very narrow streets in Florence and Rome, so you have to walk a lot. I highly recommend limoinrome; the drivers were great and very informative, and we rode in immaculate Mercedes vans. The company provided an art historian who guided us through the Vatican. We also opted for a personal guided tour of Pompeii, which was well worth the additional 100 Euros.

I purchased a shore excursion through NCL for Monte Carlo, but some of my friends did not. They were able to do a hop on/hop off bus tour for much less than I paid to NCL and actually saw more of Monaco than I did!

In Palma de Mallorca, I paid NCL $10 for the shuttle from the ship to the city center and return. I did this because they said it was a 45-minute walk to the city center and that if we took the local bus it would take "a long time" to get into the city. After we arrived in town, we paid 15 Euros for a hop on/hop off bus tour and then found out that, low and behold, the tour bus stopped right in front of the ship. So we could have saved the $10 for the NCL shuttle and picked up the double decker bus right there at the dock.

The ship was immaculate and the staff was - for the most part - very friendly and helpful. We had three in a balcony cabin and I ended up on the foldout bed, which was like a rock! I asked the cabin steward for some additional padding and he provided a foam pad and several extra comforters. This made it much better, but still not really comfortable. The cabin steward was very nice and accommodating.

The entertainment was not up to the standards I found on my only previous cruise (Celebrity Infinity). Also, the staff in the theater was somewhat rude when it was crowded and we were trying to find seats.

Everyone says to play the the casino the first night you sail, because the slots are looser that night. I did NOT find that to be the case on the Jade. LOL!

The spa was great and they had several good deals going. Everyone who purchased a shore excursion was offered a 75-minute massage and mini-facial for $129 (a substantial discount off the regular price). I purchased this and was very satisfied. They also sold a very limited number of spa "memberships" (only 40 total) which allowed you access to a private part of the spa. There were hot tubs, therapy pools, saunas, steam rooms, tropical and ice showers, and (best of all) heated stone loungers. No children allowed.

This is great for anyone who doesn't want to wear a bathing suit in front of the entire ship and doesn't want to be splashed by small children. The cost was $99 for one or $150 for two. The two didn't have to be a couple, so I was able to split the cost with a friend. It was worth every penny. We were provided a locker (with a key) and a robe, so we could go to the spa in our regular clothes and change there. They also had regular showers (with shampoo & body wash) and hair dryers, so you didn't have to leave with wet hair.

Despite some minor irriations (the fold-out bed, unnecessary $10 shuttle in Palma, and rude staff in the theatre), this cruise was a great experience and I recommend it to anyone who hasn't traveled in Europe before.

On the whole a very nice experience, though promos hide some extra expenses, June 20, 2010

Pros: Interior design, friendly helpful crew, mostly good food, emphasis on hygiene

Cons: Too loud music, lack of classical music, some extras very overpriced, TV

Departure port: Barcelona

Region visited: Europe

Cabin category: Outside

Cabin number: 5028

Good for children: Yes

This was my first cruise experience. The ship is beautiful, well maintained, with very well designed interior, including the rather small cabin with window.

Food was mostly good, although not too varied. Six out of the 10 restaurants carried a surcharge. Crew was very nice and give you the feeling that they really care about you. On a ship of this class I would expect to have a flat screen TV in the cabin.

Afternoon and evening entertainment in bars and lounges was generally good, but too loud for such intimate places. Unfortunately, there was no classical music at all. The evening shows varied between mediocre and good.

The "Freestyle" seems to suit better younger folks than the elderly people (I am an octogenarian).
